About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

”A SANDPIPER HUNTING” BY JULES MOIGNIEZ (FRENCH, 1835-1894)
Signed in base “J. Moigniez”; circa late 19th century
Item # 809XFP15P

Exquisitely chiseled and cast, as is almost always the case with lifetime works by Moigniez, this fine cabinet bronze is full of life and motion. As the sandpiper flies over a variety of foliage along the water’s edge, his attention is caught by a wriggling worm on the sand beside half-buried shells. Moigniez’s signature in script is precise on a smoothed surface amongst the foliage in the naturalistic base.  This specific model is depicted on page 225 of Jane Horswell's Bronze Sculptures of Les Animaliers.

Measurements: 8 1/4” H x 6 5/8” W x 3 3/8” D

Condition Report:
A steel “crossbar” was added to the underside of the sculpture to allow a marble base to be attached if desired. An old repair above ankle of foremost foot. Very fine original patina.
