AFTER ANTOINE-LOUISE BARYE (FRENCH, 1796-1875) "LION QUI MARCHE"
Signed "Barye" in naturalistic base, cast posthumously after 1875
Item # 1403NMP05-A
One of Baryé's most recognizable bronze sculptures, model captures a lion walking proudly, his eyes raised onward at a potential challenger or perceived threat, his gaping mouth likely releasing an ominous growl as he advances with utter confidence. Every muscle is taught and strained, the hair furled and wild, his ribs lightly outlined along the sheer profile of his trim body; his rear legs are particularly well sculpted, the tendons protruding with bulging veins wrapping around the massive muscle of these powerful members. The base is plain and is impressed "BARYE" in the middle. Two versions of "Lion Marchant" are held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, one almost certainly cast in Barye's own studio (acc. no. 10.133.2), the other cast after his death in 1875 (acc. no. x.420) by Barbedienne.
