“AFTER THE BATTLE” BY AUGUSTE DOVIANE (ITALIAN, 1825-1887)
Signed lower left “A. Doviane d'apres M. Diday”, in oil on canvas
Item # 807KQX21K
A lively historical scene by Auguste (or Viande) Doviane, it is signed in a fine red script in the lower left corner as being after “M. Diday”, perhaps referring to Francois Diday. It is an intense scene full of action and movement as the exhuasted soldiers rest and tend to their wounded as the smoke settles in the calm of battle. It is beautifully detailed and was carefully conserved in the last decade or so to bring the work back to life. It is held in an old giltwood frame with attractive acanthus treatments in the corners. The painting remains in very fine presentation-ready condition.
Measurements: 26 3/8” W x 2” D x 20 1/4” H [frame]; 20 1/4” H x 14 3/8” W [canvas]
Professionally conserved and relined in the last decade or so; nice old frame, not original. Minor wear to gilding of frame. Under UV the surface is a bit difficult to read, though it does appear to have restoration to the sky in the upper left, along the crest of the building, scattered specks of touch up here and there.
