American Chippendale Style Camel Back Sofa, Philadelphia taste, 20th C
AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE STYLE CAMEL BACK SOFA OVER MARLBOROUGH FEET
In the Philadelphia taste, circa 20th century
Item # 709BVV26L
Clearly influenced by the Thomas Affleck sofa currently held in the collection of the Department of State in the Diplomatic Reception rooms, this fine reproduction is powerful and impactful from every angle. Most attractive are the thick mahogany legs set in oversized cove-molded block feet, the legs stretched with horizontal lengths of mahogany that result in an incredible strength throughout; true to the craftsmanship of the originals, the medial stretchers dovetail into the sides with permanency. The exaggerated hump of the camel back curves outward into gentle slopes that mirror the outward curl of the arms, these opposing C-scrolls curving perfectly into the squared terminal that begins the front leg. Comfortable and supportive, the seat is upholstered over the rail in a high quality light-maroon fabric; this is probably at least a decade old, though it remains quite servicable still depending on your color scheme.
Measurements: 79 1/4” W x 31” D x 39 1/4” H, 17” H to seat
Minor discolorations and stains to the upholstery, overall in “good” condition. Legs heavily worn with a very dark original finish, this rather oxidized. Very sturdy and strong.
