American Chippendale Style Carved Mahogany Lowboy
AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE STYLE CARVED MAHOGANY LOWBOY
Circa early-to-mid 20th century, handmade in the Philadelphia taste
Item # 805MIA12O
This is a beautifully handmade reproduction Chippendale lowboy chest of drawers in the Philadelphia tradition. Crafted out of solid mahogany, the top is inverted in the front corners with integral thumb molding, this projecting over the cove molding that wraps around the case. The hand dovetailed drawers are lined in poplar in the traditional manner with original pierced batwing brasses, the upper a single wide drawer over three smaller drawers. The centermost drawer is well developed with a full rocaille shell carving surrounded by acanthus over the circular apron motif of the same inspiration. Particularly attractive are the corner treatments beneath the fluted columns - these show a very practiced hand at foliage carving, the leaves twisting and curving along the length of the knee over a cabriole leg that terminates in crisp talons clasping a ball. It is a great piece that was carefully built to last the test of time.
