AMERICAN BLACK AND OCHRE PAINT DECORATED BLANKET CHEST
Pennsylvania, circa 1810; resting over original ogival feet
Item # 809TOE15P
A well preserved dower chest from the first quarter of the 19th century, the beautifully oxidized painted finish is original throughout over the pine primary woods. Yellow pine is used almost exclusively throughout the case, the only notable exception being the drawer sides for the tiny interior drawers beneath the till. The smokey finish is a wonderful burnt ochre hue set against a nearly pitch black accenting in the feet and mouldings. The pair of drawers retain original brasses and locks, though a key is not available for these or the lid. Typical of the period, the dovetailing is left exposed along the sides of the case and thick wooden pegs are visible at even intervals attaching the lid moulding around the top and locking the feet into the blocking behind them.
