Antique Oil Painting | Pastoral Sheep Landscape | Francis Wheaton
FRANCIS WHEATON (AMERICAN, 1849-1942) PAINTING OF SHEPHERD WITH SHEEP
Signed lower left F WHEATON, executed in oil on panel
Item # 705CPP17L
A fine Barbizon work by the American artist Francis Wheaton, this oil on panel depicts an evening scene of a shepherd bringing his flock home after a day at pasture. The complex sky is warm and chaotic with hints of pink over the horizon blending into brilliant golds with touches of blues. The darkening sky has cast shadows over the hillside where the well trod dirt road is flanked by grass that only hints at the deep green of the countryside. It is a moving work of impressionism where the mottled and heavily impasto brush leaves only hints of the animals and scene. Lower left the work is signed F WHEATON in his typical blocked script.
Born in Valparaiso, Chili, Wheaton is known for rural genre, landscape including snow scenes, and specializing in animals. Francis studied at the National Academy Design School, and the Art Institute of Chicago, and was also a member of the Copley Society of Boston and Salons of America. Exhibitions include the Art Institute of Chicago, Boston Art Club, National Academy of Design, Salons of America and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Wheaton died in Viola, New York.
