Belle Époque Gilt Bronze Desk Writing Set by Armand Guénard for Susse Freres
A FINELY CAST GILT BRONZE INKWELL WRITING SET
Cast by Susse Freres, sculpted by Armand Guénard; France, circa 1910
Item # 801ZCU01P
This is a remarkably complete gilt bronze writing suite by Susse Freres from the first quarter of the 20th century. It retains the original pen shaft (no tip), the well with an original pewter or lead cup insert, a very finely chiseled twin inkwell centerpiece and the original rolling blotter. The edge of the blotter is finished with a top-grain leather with gilt lettering in the edge noting the retailer Susse Freres. Other than the pewter/lead well and the pen, every piece is signed by both Susse Freres and Armand Guénard (Guénardeau Sculp). It is a very fine acquisition for anyone passionate about the exquisite bronze work executed during the Belle Époque.
Measurements: [pen well] 2 3/4” H x 2 1/4” W; [pen] 6” L; [blotter] 2 1/2” H x 5” W x 2 1/2” D; [inkwell] 3 3/8” H x 13” W x 6 7/8” D
No tip to pen. Discoloration/staining to blotter. Inkwell cups missing. Minor discoloration and typical but very light wear to gilding as expected.
