About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

EMIL VAN MARCKE (FRENCH, 1827-1890)
"IN GREEN PASTURES"
Signed lower left "E. van Marcke", titled en verso "In Green Pastures" and signed on cradled panel
Item # 411PSP29Q

In this fine landscape a group of cattle lounging in a plush pasture as the farmer's wife approaches from a distance. It is carefully detailed while maintaining that certain dreamy prelude to impressionism found in Marcke's work, particularly notable in his darkest cattle and the bokeh of the background and approaching figure.  It is signed prominently in the lower left corner with the same signature found on the cradled back.  It appears to be preserved in nearly untouched condition, though we can certainly have it conserved upon request at a very reasonable cost to bring back it's original vibrancy of color and clarity of sky.  For any serious collectors of works by Emil van Marcke, this is a very fine acquisition indeed.

Measurements:  [framed] 24" W x 20 13/16" H; 16 7/8" W x 13 1/8" H [panel]

Condition Report:
Early frame, though not original; frame with dings, abrasions and gilt loss.  Cradled panel entirely original with original script on top of cradle.  Surface is dirty and would benefit from a cleaning - we can have this cleaned for you, though lead time is often 3-6 months for our conservator to complete that for you.  Specks of paint loss.  Lower varnish darkened.  Craquelure to surface throughout, somewhat distracting in lower half.  Under UV examination painting appears to be free of any restorations.
