EXCEPTIONAL EMPIRE BIRCH MARBLE TOP PIER TABLE
Northern Europe, probably Austria or Germany c. 1825
Item # 509LMP28
Of exceedingly fine quality and elegant design, this Empire pier table is in an untouched state of preservation, retaining originality in every aspect. The design is perfect in every way, the bold cyma-curved legs tapering gently in all three dimensions to lend a fine sense of balance and movement in an otherwise austere form. The angularity is striking and allows it to meld flawlessly with even the most modern interior, the blonde nature of the birch contrasting sharply with the beautiful and original marble top. Birch veneers of mild grains and golden hues dress the table richly over the hard yellow pine secondary surfaces, most of the structure joined with large and finely cut hand dovetails - an outline of these is visible beneath the veneers along the sides of the waist and openly along the back corners.
For the serious collector of fine European antiques, this is an exceedingly fine acquisition; items with this clarity and perfection in conception and execution are hard to come by and are very fine accent points for a well thought out interior.
