English Art Deco Inlaid Rosewood Chiffonier, Heal & Son c. 1930
ART DECO INLAID ROSEWOOD CHIFFONIER BY HEAL & SON LTD.
England, circa 1930; retaining original maker's seal
Item # 704VCM22P
This finely crafted Deco period chiffonier is an interesting intersection of angular simplicity against the rich materials with only light surface embellishment. The primary surfaces are veneered with a wonderful mellowed rosewood; the exotic wood was selected such that the grain pattern is symmetrical through the vertical lay of broad drawers, set at angles of opposition in the smaller drawers and matched in the upper doors. A clean division of space is achieved with the stringer inlay, successfully breaking the piece down into smaller visual packets for the eye to digest. The upper doors open outward revealing a pair of linen drawers, these full width and with plenty of overhead space for stacked linens. The smaller drawers below allow orderly separation of laundries, the right small drawer retaining the original circular seal of Heal & Son Ltd., London; all drawers are hand dovetailed with very precise pins. All doors and drawers retain their original octagonal knobs, a stark contrast against the darker woods. The case rests over tapered legs with acanthus carvings, the only carved embellishment on the piece.
