English Georgian Style Walnut Lowboy circa 1900
ENGLISH GEORGIAN STYLE WALNUT LOWBOY CHEST
Stamped MADE IN ENGLAND to reverse, circa early 20th century
Item # 803VGR13P
This gorgeous reproduction Georgian-style lowboy has survived over a century of use, resulting in a delightful mixture of both faux-distressing and the natural rubbing and wear from over a hundred years of hand polishing and light use. The result is a silky smooth patina and wonderful surface colour. Crafted during the first years of the 20th century, the lowboy was obviously created by a talented craftsman working almost entirely by hand unassisted by much machinery; the drawers show perfect hand dovetailing with precise pins and the joinery utilized in the casework is excellent and has resulted in perfect strength and surfaces surviving intact without cracking over decades of shrinking and expanding of the wood. The matched veneers on the top display the random burl of the walnut as they are best viewed: with symmetry and form found in the chaos by slicing the veneers from the same plank of wood and rotating them to present a full picture. Each of the drawers also are veneered in this burl walnut with cross-hatched inlays framing the Queen Anne style brass drawer hardware. The entire case rests over cabriole legs terminating in simple pad feet.
