ENGLISH REGENCY MAHOGANY SOFA TABLE
England, circa second quarter 19th century
Item # 703CJG20P
A restrained yet refined work from the second quarter of the 19th century, the table exhibits the distinct Greek classical lines made common during the Regency period. Angular klismo legs raise the table’s rectangular stepped columns, each highlighted with a small applied rosette over the original brass castors. The columns are locked in place with a sharp turned stretcher and are flanked on either side by demilune drop leaves that raise over outward swinging wings tucked into the frame. A pair of drawers slide easily in and out of the frame on one side, the opposing side presenting beautifully with faux-drawers complete with cockbead molding and escutcheons. The drawers are expertly crafted with tight dovetail pins, the hand planed bottom board with light chamfering around the edges to allow this to be set into grooves in the drawer sides. It is a beautifully crafted piece, the austerity of which allows it to meld beautifully with a broad number of settings. A warm color, mellowed patina and fine overall condition make it a most striking selection.
