English Victorian Mahogany and Green Leather Pedestal Desk, 19th Century
ENGLISH VICTORIAN MAHOGANY AND GREEN LEATHER PEDESTAL DESK
Circa 3rd quarter of 19th century
Item # 810DJT16L
An attractive and well worn English Victorian period antique pedestal desk from the third quarter of the 19th century, the warm patina in the mellowed mahogany is most striking. The gilt tooled green leather top is quite old and likely original, surrounded by a banded edge and integral quarter-round molding in a top section that easily lifts free from the lower pedestals for simple transport. It is actually light enough for one strong person to move around the home without much difficulty. The graduated drawers are beautifully dovetailed with stamped backplates and cast brass rings smoothly operating the drawers, each offering deep and plentiful storage space. It is a simple desk intended to be practical and functional, the sides and back left simple and without embellishment. The entire desk rests over angular bracket feet.
Measurements: 30 1/8” H x 48” W x 35” D; 24 1/4” H from ground to underside of writing area x 20” W between pedestals
Leather is old and likely original with stains and wear as expected. Old surface with lovely patina, age appropriate wear throughout: color loss (more obvious around drawers), light chipping, shrinkage cracks in the sides, some patches to the sides. No key.
