BRONZE FIGURAL GROUP OF A FISHERMAN TEACHING HIS SON
Circa late 19th century, unsigned
Item # 611RNK03

A remarkably complex group of exquisite quality, the sculpture depicts a fisherman with his young son at the end of the day, sitting beside the water’s edge and teaching him to play the lute.  The nets and ropes are chaotically strewn across the rock they sit on while the father gives him tips on the fretwork.  Around the father’s neck hanging from a thong is a portrait of his wife and son, while the son has a similar necklace with an engraved portrait of his mother.  It is difficult to stress the quality of the casting, the exquisite chiseling and detailing being above reproach in every way: the bone curvatures of their feet, perfect nails, anatomical exactness and attractive features.  The translucent light brown patina simply glows against the burnished bronze surfaces.  For the collector who demands the best, this is a most striking selection indeed.
