About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

PAIR OF LOUIS XVI STYLE PARCEL-GILT HIGHLIGHTED WALNUT FAUTEUILS
Likely French, circa early 20th century
Item # 201IXB27P

A good pair of early 20th century fauteuils in the Louis XVI taste, executed in France during the first quarter of the century, they exhibit solid walnut surfaces that have been carved and turned in the manner typical of the Belle Époque: a beautifully expressed garland of laurel leaves as an arched focal point in the crest flanked by pyramidical finials draped in acanthus foliage; repeating patterns of layered water-leaves embellish the raised edges of the molded chair back while the open arms are raised over carved fish-scales terminating in serrated foliage. The covering is old but not original with an overall coral hue with hints of an earlier green covering coming through under the stuffed arm-rests. The chairs are raised over stop-fluted tapered legs with exaggerated lobes in the upper baluster ring. A most attractive pair.

Measurements: 38 7/8" H x 26 1/4" W x 22 1/4" D x 17" H to seat

Condition Report:
Old worn covering, overall "fair" condition and still serviceable with blemishes and discolorations as photographed; arm-rests worn through to an older underlying fabric; tear along the lower edge of the finishing fabric on the reverse of one chair back; wear and light surface abrasions throughout the walnut; sturdy joints; overall comfortable though the springs should be retied when reupholstered.
