EXCEPTIONAL LOUIS XV STYLE CHINOISERIE DECORATED CABINET
Parisian quality, likely French; circa 1890-1910
Item # 609TPZ25Q
A most powerful one-shelf cabinet of the finest quality, the craftsman of this piece showed attention to every detail from the joinery to selection of veneers and ultimately the finely executed chinoiserie of the two doors. The marble top conforms to the complex curvature of the cabinet, inverting centermost in something of an oxbow in symmetry with the cabinet doors below. The parquetry veneers throughout the case are bookmatched to create pleasing angles and grain rays throughout the surface, interupted by gilt bronze mounts of the finest chiseling. The sabots in particular are exquisite, each a crisply cast lion’s paw under sharply serrated foliage, the front legs with a tapering curve of bronze starting above the knee and following through the foot; this works to protect the joint of the veneers on the knee edge, but also accentuates the lines of the cabinet much more clearly. The doors feature scenes of trees in a large Eastern garden, a family socializing while a young girl fishes from the edge of a patio in one door while the other shows a man walking his dog along a curving bank. They open to reveal a notched interior with a single adjustable shelf.
Remaining in simply outstanding original condition, this bold and exquisite work is a perfectly balanced and carefully designed object that is an absolute strikepoint.
