NAPOLEON III MARQUETRY INLAID ORMOLU MOUNTED BIBLIOTHEQUE
Probably France c. 1870
Item # 701GBC30P
This most refined bookcase is designed with a fine sense of scale and proportion. It’s slight dimensions allow it to serve without overwhelming an interior. Crafted with great skill and attention to detail, the surface throughout is incredibly rich. The ebonized grounds bring dramatic contrast to the mahoganized birdseye maple veneers, these edged by satinwood stringer inlay that allows each panel to absolutely pop. Each spandrel of the drawer is inlaid with a complex anthemion arrangement under a most striking floral arrangement that flows across the single upper drawer. Cast gilt bronze borders finish all of the important edges, the corner columns canted with powerful mounted figurals on the top and vases with foliage springing forth on the bottom - the casting quality of these mounts is noteworthy, the crisp and fine treatment of details admirable. The bevelled glass door opens to give access to three adjustable shelves, the full interior finished in birdseye maple veneers left with their natural board color. The cabinet rests over turned ebonized toupie feet with bronze ring embellishments. It is a simply gorgeous collection display cabinet but also serves well as a bookcase in the study. Remaining in outstanding original condition, it is a fine strikepoint.
