Fine Neoclassical Gilt Carved Eagle Canapé, Early 19th Century

EXCEPTIONAL NEOCLASSICAL PARCEL GILT AND EBONIZED CANAPE

A most striking and refined canape of an unusual and delicate form, the work literally sprawls in a span of 86” against only 33 1/2” in height, creating a slender and stretched visual plane that is most attractive.  The blonde wood, either a bleached walnut or perhaps a grainy fruitwood, is carefully chosen to match grains between planks; the arms curve gently outwards and terminate on all four corners in exquisite carved eagle heads.  These mostly retain their original gilding, though time and use has worn some away, each being stretched with turned ebonized balusters that join from the curve of the crest to the start of the eagle head.  The rest of the form is mostly unembellished other than applied acanthus molding inside each arm and the delightful carved and ebonized lion paw feet.  A silk covers the seat and back, the comfortable webbed padding creating a soft and enjoyable seat.  Beneath the seat back is a pierced carved display of flowing grape leaves and tangles of vines.

Condition Report:
Old refinish of fruitwood with old scars, blemishes and some minor patching.  Old cracks to wood from shrinkage; light cracks and some patching to pierced grape leaf gallery.  Original ebonizing and gilding, this with some extensive wear/loss in the eagle heads and arm stretchers.  Fabric is in “fair” condition with discolorations and stains.  Not examined under upholstery.  Some light wiggle in joints.
