About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

FRANS LEBRET (DUTCH, 1820-1909) SHEEP, COW AND CHICKENS IN FARMYARD
Oil on artist panel, signed "Frans Lebret" lower left
Item # 611YUN11

The fine work capturing texture in this painting is remarkable, a vast palette of chaotic hues carefully bringing to life the rugged brick exterior of the barn and the mottled variated surface of the earth beneath the creatures that call these home.  The trio of sheep foremost are most endearing, painted with utmost realism and anatomical accuracy, hence forgoing any hint of “Romantic” influence in the expressions and postures of either.  From within the deep shadows of the barn a curious cow looks out while a pair of chickens pick at the bugs and grains in the dusty floor.  The work remains in nearly perfect original condition, apparently free of any restoration and simply gorgeous.  It is signed lower left "Frans Lebret” in a red script.

Literature: E. Benezit Dictionary of Artists, vol. XIII, Gründ, 2006, p. 677-678

Measurements:  21” W x 16” H x 1 1/8” D (framed); 15 3/16” W x 10 1/4” H (artist panel)

Condition Report:
Contemporary frame.  Surface appears to be free of any restoration, remaining in excellent original condition; it would likely brighten if cleaned, but is simply gorgeous presently. Minor edge wear from rubbing frame.
