FRANS VAN LEEMPUTTEN (BELGIAN, 1850-1914) PAINTING OF A SHEPHERDESS WITH HER SHEEP
Signed "Frans Van Leemputten" lower right
Item # 505EIK31S
A positively exquisite scene with unnatural vibrancy of color, this subtly impressionistic work by Frans Van Leemputten is distinctly influenced by the Barbizon School, expressed in it's high-chroma palette and the sheer depth of colors worked into every detail of the scene. The spring landscape captures a pasture by the sea through which a young Shepherdess walks down a dirt path with her large flock of sheep, the spires of ship masts peeking up from the harbour beneath a lightly clouded sky. Signed in the lower right corner, the work remains in impeccable condition with a gentle craquelure across the surface that is most attractive.

Recently conserved and painting itself is in excellent ready-to-hang condition, at which time the surface was cleaned and the fragile canvas was relined with a linen. The frame is quite early, heavily discolored with light chipping along the bottom edge and more serious chipping along the top right edge - all sides are worn. Under UV shows just minor areas of touch up and inpainting (see image under UV for more details).
