FRENCH DIRECTOIRE MAHOGANY AND LEATHER BUREAU PLAT
Circa mid-to-late 19th century
Item # 805LNP19P
An incredibly fine presentation piece crafted of the finest materials, this gorgeous French Neoclassical writing desk is a vivid strikepoint. Dressed in choice selections of flamed mahogany, the veneers are laid out with precision in a way that allows the grain to flow from one drawer to the next across the facade. The sides of the desk are nearly as dramatic as the front and back. A beautifully patinated gilt-tooled leather writing surface across the top shows the history of its active usage throughout the material - writing wings extend from either side to enlarge the surface, each of these matching the top perfectly. The hand dovetailed drawers are crafted with oak secondaries, the right drawer (when sitting) with a four-compartment storage box that lifts to reveal some storage space and access to the keyhole to open the document box behind it. The quality of craftsmanship is top-notch and has resulted in the desk remaining in very good original condition throughout. It is a very fine display piece for the library or study, but also a very functional and enjoyable desk for the active office.
Measurements: 64 5/8” W x 32 3/4” D x 30 1/8” H; writing wings extend 18 1/4” and are 25 7/8” D on either side
Old finish, not original and likely French polished in the 20th century; swan escutcheons perhaps added. Retains working key for all locks. Original leather writing surface with wear and discoloration as expected. Some cracks and losses to veneers throughout, a few areas of patched veneer. Sturdy, strong and a powerful presentation.
