FRENCH LOUIS XV STYLE GILT AND PATINATED BRONZE CANDELABRA
Stamped J.D. in base and acanthus; stamped ZZ in elements, circa late 19th century
Item # 703ZFR31P
This finely chiseled and most intricate candelabra features a single putto standing before a towering acanthus stalk from which springs an extensive collection of flowers and leafage, the stems raising candle wells for four lights in a naturalistic and chaotic manner. The figure is simply gorgeous, the perfect casting with even the most minute details expressed fully; he holds a dove in the crook of his arm. He stands over a naturalistic patinated base, this affixed to a gilt bronze stand clearly ornamented in the Louis XV taste. Elements throughout are impressed ZZ and the base of the acanthus and where this joins the patinated base are both stamped J.D., presumably the foundry that executed the piece. It is a most striking lighting piece, the original patina in outstanding overall condition, having been fully cleaned and polished in the shop.
