LOUIS XVI STYLE MAHOGANY AND TOOLED LEATHER BUREAU PLAT
Continental, circa mid 19th century
Item # 702YSB11A
Such an interesting piece, this bureau plat hosts a rich and beautifully worn surface throughout. The leather is particularly excellent, the mottled and heavily discolored material etched with years of gentle activity. Surrounding the leather is a thick bronze rim that finishes the projecting rim, the front of the desk having a pair of deep drawers and the reverse with faux drawers for balance and effect only. The drawers secondary woods show age in the desk, the golden oak now a dark oxidized brown from years of use, while the large hand cut dovetails still lock the frame together beautifully. The desk rests over fluted legs with cast bronze flutings that drape from the top of each leg beneath large turned brass caps, each leg tapering tightly into acanthus cast sabots.
This angular and clean form carefully balances the extensive bronze mountings against the warmth found in over a century of gentle wear and waxing. A most attractive piece for the classical sitting room and study.
