GEORGIAN MAHOGANY TWO-TIER DUMBWAITER TABLE
With fine waterleaf carved urn finial, English c. 1790
Item # 609UBP10P

A finely designed and executed dumbwaiter table, this example is particularly nice with it’s crisply carved waterleaf urn-finial on the top level.  Perfectly formed from a solid block of mahogany, the urn elevates the table above it’s peers significantly.  The robust graduated fluting around both balusters is most attractive and shows the distinct taste it’s designer had for the Neoclassical while still resting over the earlier cabriole leg.  These dovetail into the underside of the lower baluster, each dynamic in it’s curvature with a raised upper edge and terminating in a simple club foot over an integral shoe, each rolling easily with their original brass castors.  The table was designed for use in the dining room, allowing numerous platters to be easily accessed by the diners without a servant immediately attending them - it was further employed as a presentation piece for silver and other pieces when not being used in service.  Often the dumbwaiter will be found to match the columns and architecture of the dining table for symmetry.  This example is a most interesting example with it’s unusually thick and robust column work.  By having only two tiers, it remains restrained and does not dominate a room.  A most fine addition for the classical living room in particular where it can serve conveniently as a side table between chairs or as a presentation piece in the corner of the room.

Measurements:  approx. 45” H, 25 1/2” W at first level, 21 1/2” W at second level
