GILT BRONZE SCULPTURE OF GALILEO
Circa mid-to-late 19th Century, unsigned
Item # 1403OPP22-P
This bronze figural sculpture of Galileo was probably cast during the second quarter of the 19th Century, the piece absent of any signatures or foundry marks. The surface is very nicely chiseled and finished by hand, the details of his form executed with precision throughout. The body is executed in the lost-wax method, the joints hidden quite cleverly under frills and throngs of garb, the robe affixed with a single hand filed screw along his back. It has been attached to a later base. For anyone passionate about excellent antique bronze sculptures of classical figures, this is a wonderful selection.
Measurements: 14 1/8" high (figure), 18 1/2" high (total height) x 7 1//8" wide (base) x 5 1/2" deep (base)
Oxidization to gilding; bronze has thinned from age: two tiny wear holes in the robe; chips and roughness to the base. Marble base is likely later.
