GEORGE II STYLE MAHOGANY WINE CHEST OF DRAWERS
Predominantly 18th century over later base, interior recently fitted
Item # 805KRP12K
This beautifully crafted blanket chest was altered in the last century to present and store wines and liquors in a tasteful manner. A more attractive case would be difficult to find for the project, as this is crafted of a beautifully burnished and dense Cuban mahogany with vivid graining throughout. The lid raises over original iron hinges to reveal a neatly divided interior with a lidded box on the right and cubbies for eight bottles on the left flanking a stepped center where glasses and liquors can be stored. A pair of half-width drawers slide easily in and out of the case beneath this. At some point, likely during the 19th century, a matching base was crafted for the chest with a scalloped apron and a very powerful carved shell set centrally, the whole resting over slightly cabriole legs and padded feet.
We dont generally bring altered or adjusted pieces into the shop, but this was so obviously and competently adjusted to meet the needs of today’s home while the original chest is of such high grade mahogany and hardware that it really is a marvelous selection for the home. It is convenient and practical while incredibly beautiful.
