About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

JOHN CARLETON WIGGINS (AMERICAN, 1848-1932) PAINTING, “ON HOLLAND DUNES”
Signed “Carleton Wiggins” lower left, titled en verso in charcoal
Item # 1404PZG14-Z

Standing deep within a grassy Netherlands landscape, the Shepherd is depicted amongst his flock, chewing their way through the swirling greens and yellows of an autumn pasture. Characterized with a warm tones, soft hues that almost blend one into the next, dreamy broad brush strokes and restive skies, the work is truly peaceful and relaxed. The shepherd leans gently on his staff, enjoying the mild weather and the nostalgic scenery while the sheep graze with lazy contentment. Clearly a work of the Tonalist movement, pigments of only minimal variation are employed in a manner and depth that capture every detail while suspending reality. A fine work by an artist with vision and passion for his subject, this investment grade painting of the American Barbizon-Impressionism School is an outstanding selection for serious collectors. It is nearly untouched, in it's original lining and on it's original stretchers - we have chosen to not have the painting cleaned, though upon request and purchase we can certainly have this expertly conserved, which will result in much brighter and vibrant colors throughout.
