About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

”ON THE USK NEAR BRECON” PAIR OF LANDSCAPE PAINTINGS BY THOMAS SCOTT CALLOWHILL (BRITISH, 1840-1934)
In oil on canvas, each signed T. Scott Callowhill 1877 in opposing corners; reverse of one inscribed on canvas “On the Usk Near Brecon, T. Scott Callowhill, Worcester”
Item #  807LTZ15P

This very fine pair of landscape paintings show different views of the same river; in one scene a young woman is walking down a meandering path that winds through autumn grasses along the river’s edge, while in the second scene a different young woman has presumably followed the same path to its end where she gets in a small rowboat. The vivid detail is spectacular, all trees showing complex foliage and even blades of grass are depicted with singularity. The reflections cast upon the moving water are exquisite in their realism. Both pictures are housed in early gilt wood frames and bear the crisp signature “T. Scott Callowhill” in the lower corners, along with the date of 1877.

Measurements: 16 3/4” H x 22 3/4” W x 2 1/8” D [frame]

Condition Report:
Professionally conserved (cleaned and newly varnished, touch ups to losses including one large chip in the upper sky of the boat scene and two touchups to sky of the other scene); light craquelure, more notable in the sky of one painting; frames old but likely not original with minor gilt wear and chips.
