Signed Lamois lower left, oil on panel in original frame
Item # 702MTA18P

This gorgeous little French coastal painting depicts a quaint village built up against the harbor, the old stone warehouse buildings lining the water’s edge while the sails of the vessels rise into the sky higher than the tallest structure.  In the distance is the shadowy spire of the cathedral piercing the heavy clouds that loom overhead.  The water is calm with a sense of early morning or late evening as a single rowboat with two figures glides across the surface.  The work is signed in the lower left Lamois, a French artist that mostly handled seascapes and small genre scenes, active during the late 19th century.  It is housed in an early and possibly original frame.

Measurements:  [frame] 13” H x 20” W x 2 1/8” D [panel] 6 7/8” H x 14” W

Condition Report:
Surface would benefit from being cleaned (yellowed varnish, light surface grime); light edge loss from frame rubbing.  Frame is probably original, gilding discolored and a few beads missing.  Under UV surface apparently free of any repairs.
