PAIR OF ART DECO BIRCH, ROSEWOOD AND STEEL BOOKCASES
Streamline Modern movement, circa 1930s; of superb quality throughout
Item # 712EUT08Q
This pair of bookcases with their single drawer are designed with the very essence of the Art Deco movement expressed fully in their form. Angular and free of any excessive surface embellishment, they explore the newest and most innovative materials of their time: plywood dressed in gorgeous veneers of birch, custom cast steel pulls, bakelite, solid rosewood, birch veneers, birch solid woods, full length hinges on the glass doors. The gentle curving of the corners leaves the case softened, the thin profile allowing them to meld into the room without dominating it in any way. Each opens to reveal a pair of shelves and a fully birch lined interior; when they close, a tiny ball-latch impressed Made in Germany allows the door tension to lock in place. Top notch cabinet work is on display in the crisply hand dovetailing in the drawers. The bookcases rest over a rosewood footing finished with an applied molded edge.
We acquired these bookcases along with a matching desk and club chair from a single estate, the provenance of which is quite interesting and is available upon request. They are a very powerful glimpse into an era of material exploration and design that resulted in some of the most innovative forms of the century. They are inordinately well made and are a wonderful find for any connoisseur with a passion for detail and careful cabinetwork.
