Pair of French Napoleon III Bronze Garniture Vases c. 1870-90
PAIR OF NAPOLEON III BRONZE VASES W/ CLASSICAL CASTING
Item # 602DGC13A
A powerful pair of vases with intricate classical castings set symmetrically across all surfaces, these are a most fine strikepoint for a mantel or hallway console. The female masks on either side are flanked by furls of twisting ribbon that continues around the perimeter over deeply cast and carefully chiseled garlands of fruit and flowers that drape behind the handles. Each handle hosts the bust of a cherub under the slithering form of a snake crawling over the scrolled handle crests. The body of the vases is a most intricate display of acanthus and other foliage in raised-relief over a plinth embellished with figural masks over foliage. The vases have a single brass cup that sits into the body of the vessel, easily removed to reveal the open interior. The patina is a mix of light browns, golden hues and brassy undertones with rubbing and brighter bronze from handling on the raised areas. Remaining in nearly pristine condition, this is a precious and most striking pair of sculptural vases that make a significant impact in elevating a space.
