PAIR OF LOUIS XVI STYLE CARVED GILTWOOD FAUTEUILS
Probably Paris, circa 1900
Item # 702OEM11O
Introducing a dramatic pair of Louis XVI fauteuils, detail rich with extensive, exquisite hand carving and gilding. At the chair apex is a carving of a “bouquet” of various musical instruments: harps, sheet music, horns, flutes; with a setting of roses and leaves around them. The entire frame of the fauteuil is outlined by an intricate carving of a bar with ribbon wrapping continuously around it, which is complemented in places by perfectly executed beading. The capitals are crowned by an interesting arrangement of acanthus leaves. The legs, beginning with a floral capital, have at the top of the column a layer of acanthus leaves, followed by deep fluting, and terminate at a delicate amphora shaped foot. Noteworthy variations between the crest carvings with different musical instruments presented in each chair show the hand of a skilled and creative carver. The carefully balanced array of classical Louis XVI motifs are most pleasing. These giltwood fauteuils make a fine focal point in a room and add a sculptural layer of refinement.
