PAIR OF LOUIS XVI STYLE GREEN PAINTED CANED ROUNDBACK BERGERES
Likely French, circa late 19th century; newly upholstered in woven linen
Item # 709WNL15P
This is a very attractive pair of worn and beautifully patinated Louis XVI style roundback arm chairs in at least mostly original forest green paint. The frame is crisply carved and glows in a range from ruby to cognac in the areas where the paint has worn away and natural rubbing has brought a silky oxidization to the surface. An early and probably original caning is retained on the back and arms, curving around the sitter for a fully supportive seat; a down-stuffed cushion is upholstered in a dark beige woven linen cushion. The legs are tapered with ring turnings above and below the fluting, each terminating over a simple turned footing. This is a relatively difficult to find form in this condition and balance, the worn elements and excellent carved surfaces making the chairs a most compelling strikepoint pair.
