RARE AND EXCEPTIONAL ART NOUVEAU SEVEN PIECE GILTWOOD SUITE
Canapé, a pair of tub chairs, two larger side chairs and two slighter side chairs
Item # 510PYK21D

This perfectly designed and proportioned suite of gilt wood side chairs, a pair of tub arm chairs and a matched canapé exhibit precise and gorgeous craftsmanship throughout their remarkably heavy frames.  The design is loosely inspired by the curvy nature of the Rococo forms of the Louis XV era, but has an elegant and unique movement that shows the vision of a very talented designer.  Each side chair back is designed with organic flow, the curvature of the pierced stiles changing abruptly in the rather stocky and rooted nature of the rear legs, these with bold reeding and sudden termination.  All pieces are upholstered with a generous and comfortable seat is stuffed over the rail.  We are also offering the chairs as pairs and the canapé by itself.

This is a truly magnificent set that walks a careful balance between art and comfort; it will certainly be a cherished strike point to any finely decorated interior.

Measurements:

  • Canapé: 27 1/2" D x 55 1/4" W (at toes) x 30" H x 18 1/2" H to seat
  • Pair of Tub Chairs: 26 1/8" D x 32 1/8" W x 30" H x 17" H to seat
  • Pair of Side Chairs: 22" D x 18 1/2" W x 38 1/2" H x 19 1/2" H to seat

Condition Report:
Upholstery is in "poor" condition, stained and discolored; this should be changed at some point to properly enjoy the suite.  Gilding is worn throughout with bole and gesso visibility.  No observed repairs or restorations.  Very heavy and sturdy construction.  Overall very good state of preservation.
