Karl Emil Termohlen (Danish/American, 1863-1938), Fine Landscape Scene in Oil on Canvas
Signed lower left "K Termohlen"
Late 19th to early 20th Century
Item # 130206YRC13
This is a magnificent Tonalism oil landscape painting on canvas by Karl Emil Termohlen in large dimensions of 40" x 30" (canvas), a noteworthy size as his larger works are much more valuable than smaller works by his hand. It is a fine blend between the Tonalism movement of the 1880's and a soft move towards Impressionism, the hazy and overcast nature of the landscape bringing a nearly dreamlike nostalgia to this countryside scene. The balance in the work is perfect, the brilliant blue sky accounting for nearly half of the landscape, the clarity and luminescence a distinct contrast to the rolling hills and trees below. There is a supreme charm in the purity of this landscape, restful in character with an overwhelming sense of peace and still. Seemingly simple in nature, it is a highly technical and complex work that is slowly unpacked the more you gaze upon it.
Karl Emil Termohlen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1863 into a family of distinguished artists. He spent the first part of his career in France and Italy, painting twilight landscapes along the Mediterranean, later moving to the United States at the end of the nineteenth century. He established himself in Chicago, Illinois where he gained acceptance as a recognized artist of tonal landscapes and had works accepted and displayed both in the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art and the Art Institute in Chicago. One of his pictures took a prize in the National Academy of Design, NY. Best known for his mysterious nocturnes, Termohlen was a versatile artist who tried his hand at every subject, creating stills, portraits, and animal paintings in addition to landscapes and seascapes. The magic of his paintings was his feeling for color and light, which he transformed into blazing sunsets and shimmering moonlights. [reference: Brush & Pencil, Nov. 1903, vol. This is an outstanding acquisition for serious collectors of fine art. Exceptional, striking, a statement that stands alone, this is a work of art you will cherish for a lifetime. In April 2006, "Blazing Clouds", a work of identical size and presence sold for $18,000 at Stair Galleries Auction in New York - this is an investment quality work that will stand the test of time.
