SET OF TEN CHIPPENDALE STYLE FINELY CARVED MAHOGANY DINING CHAIRS
Over ball and claw feet, circa late 19th century
Item # 710NKK21W
A very finely carved set of ten dining chairs in the Chippendale style, they are crafted of a dense and beautifully figured mahogany with very fine craftsmanship throughout. The pierced splats exhibit the distinctive Rococo motif borrowed from the Chippendale period: the prominent use of opposing C-scrolls, rocaille ribbing along the edges of the looped center and distinctive acanthus relief carvings along the crest rail. The molded stile is exquisitely formed with a complex curved upper that cants backward to terminate in a squared leg. Two chairs have open arms that curve around the sitter quite comfortably, the arm rail beautifully formed with an inward twist to lend comfort. The chairs rest over ball and claw feet that are finely developed with sharp talons grasping the small sphere. All are sturdy and tight throughout, the seats deep and incredibly comfortable. They are a critical and most refined element for the classical dining room, being practical in their sturdy and comfortable appeal while remaining striking and incredibly beautiful. The dense mahogany has retained the crisp carving while softening from years of gentle rubbing to remain silky to the touch with a range of hue in the wood that runs from ruby to cognac throughout.
Measurements: 27 1/2” W x 24” D x 38 3/4” H, 18 1/2” H to seat [arm chairs]; 24” W x 23” D x 38 3/4” H, 18 1/2” H to seat [side chairs]
Some old repairs at joint between stile and crest rail on a few chairs, one with a small gap; all are very sturdy and tight. Gorgeous old polished patina, light wear/abrasions as expected. Upholstery in overall “good” condition with only minor discolorations.
