BRONZE MODEL OF "A SHORN EWE" BY PIERRE-ALBERT LAPLANCHE (FRENCH, 1826-1873)

A superb model of a freshly shorn lamb with exquisite casting quality throughout, this young animal is modeled lean with a short mottled coat that has been beautifully captured in the bronze. Alert and engaged, Laplanche captures the mood of the animal mid-stride as it watches a distant object of interest. The very fine details suggest an early mold.
The naturalistic base is signed in his typical script "Laplanche", this captured directly from the mold and not simply finished in processing; and the reverse of the base is cold-stamped "EV 615".
Born in Lyons in 1826, Pierre-Albert Laplanche studied under Pierre-Louis Rouillard. He exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1857 with a terra cotta model Groupe d'oiseaux morts. In 1864 he presented Etude de lama in bronze and Cerf de France in 1869. The museum in Reims holds five examples of his work.
