About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

"A YOUNG COW" PASTORAL LANDSCAPE BY JOHN CARLETON WIGGINS
In oil on canvas, signed lower left "Carleton Wiggins"
Item # 811PKJ15A

Remaining in fine condition and likely housed in its original and eleborate giltwood frame, this exquisite pastoral landscape by John Carleton Wiggins is titled on its original stretcher bars "A Young Cow - Wiggins", though this appears to be an old framer's notation and may not be the intended title of the work.  Like most of his works, it is painted on a WIndsor & Newton prepared canvas, still stamped as such verso.  The broad and vigorous brush strokes are full of depth and a chaotic collection of colors, these rendering an impressionistic autumnal grasses that are blowing in the wind coming off of the sea as the young cow looks out over the distant waters.  The work is signed lower left in his typical squared script "Carleton Wiggins".

Measurements: [frame] 27 3/4" H x 32" W x 3 5/8" D; [canvas] 17" H x 21" D

Condition Report:
Original lining.  Professionally conserved: cleaned, varnished, minimal specks of touch up visible under uv to sky and edge rubbing wear; period giltwood frame with expected wear and minor element chipping/loss.  In excellent presentation-ready condition.
