Circa early 20th century, unmarked
Item # 905PYX20Q

A fascinating and unusual pedestal writing desk of Art Nouveau inspiration, there is a certain blending of taste in the form with hints of English Arts & Crafts aesthetic intermingled with an organic naturalism. Relief carvings in large solid blocks of oak on the upper drawers of the pedestal depict artichokes while the pierced elements are reminiscent of tall reeds blowing in the wind.

All drawers are hand dovetailed with tidy oak secondary construction, easily withdrawn with brass knobs.

The reverse of the desk is identical to the front on the upper with ribbed oak panels in the lower, a fully finished facade that allows the desk to attractively reside in the center of the room.

It is being sold as-is with the original leather on the top of the desk despite the very worn condition. While a restoration firm could certainly replace these with new tooled leather, the rich patinated leather could still be used by simply placing a glass top over the writing surface.

An interesting and most functional strikepoint piece, it is a great find for space where a compelling form and historical surface can make a difference.

Measurements: 78 5/8" W x 39 3/4" D x 29 7/8" H

Heavily worn with cracking and dryness to the veneers of the left side of the top, some missing spots of veneer to the back of the desk, leather incredibly worn with large sections worn away. Missing keyhole escutcheon on center apron drawer, no key.
