FINE BIEDERMEIER STYLE FLAMED BIRCH BOX SOFA
Northern Europe, circa late 19th/early 20th century
Item # 609LCJ25
An incredibly interesting piece for it’s absolute austerity and unusual boxy form, this fine settee is crafted with thick flamed birch primary woods over a yellow pine core. The curved arm rail forms something of a half-dome over a squared recessed paneling that makes up the sides; the feet are set in a square molded foot that shows influence of the Marlborough leg. True to the pure and unembellished primary surfaces, the underside and back are a picture of simplicity: clean and symmetrical cuts of thick pine permanently join the structure with strength, free of any excessive stretchers or any unnecessary materials. The entire sofa is finished in a new black silk. It is a most fine statement piece for the modern interior with it’s bright surface and sculpted woodwork, while naturally melding perfectly with the classical interior.
