Signed on socle "E LAURENT", "Susse Fes Edtrs", foundry cachet verso; cold stamped D
Item # 908NIJ22O
An exquisitely cast antique bronze sculpture by the prolific sculptor Eugene Laurent, it is a form and sentiment ahead of its time with all of the elements of the Art Nouveau aesthetic in this Romantic representation of a young girl. Chaste and modest, her head is covered in an elaborate and exceptionally cast bonnet with multiple layers, edge incising and a twist of cloth wrapping under her chin and affixing the cap to her head, tied in a bow at the top. Her dress is beautifully modeled with texture and design elements transferred beautifully from the wax and into the bronze, the soft relief and naturalistic rippling of the fabric being perfectly represented with a complex dark brown patina with burnished relief highlights. A shoulder wrap covers her shoulders and joins the neck of the dress with a single flower tucked into the fold.
This model was cast by the Susse Freres foundry and the quality of it is self-evident. Sealed verso with their foundry cachet, their editeur marking is more clearly advertised along the edge of the socle opposite of Laurent's signature. The overall finish is moving with a deep burnished patina that is silky to the touch.
