About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

VERY FINE GEORGE III MAHOGANY AND LATICED-BRASS BREAKFRONT BOOKCASE
London c. 1800
Item # 610LKV16P

A work of inordinate beauty and handcrafted precision, this rich and luxurious piece boasts polished plum-pudding mahogany in every primary surface, laid out in a way that achieves perfect symmetry and parallelism in the chaotic flowing grains.  The craftsmanship is exceptional, the tenon-mortised door frame joinery perfect and allowing smooth function while also allowing the broad mahogany panels to shrink and contract without risk of cracking.  The upper section expertly upholstered in silk in such a way that each shelf is still easily able to be adjusted in the notched sides, though the later wiring does require that the shelves remain in their current position (but this could certainly be removed or professionally adjusted).  Brass latice work criss-crosses the glazed doors, the thick metal work beautifully executed to half-lap at each intersection.  Each drawer and door retains it’s original brass hardware, the knobs beautifully stamped with four-leaf clovers while the edge is impressed with a repeating greek-key; the lower doors on either side of the drawers are rotating knobs that operate a sprung clasp and open the doors to reveal a shelved interior.  The entire work breaks down into nine pieces (base molding, three lower cabinets, middle plank, three upper cabinets, crest molding), allowing it to be manageable when moving from one room to the next.  It has without doubt allowed this cabinet to remain in it’s present excellent original condition.

For the classical interior, this is a most powerful display piece that is enjoyed in the study, living room and dining room with equal impact.  An exceptional presentation piece.

Measurements:  84” H x 88” W x 20 1/4” D

Condition Report:
Old refinish with very fine surface patina; old patch restorations in a few places including along base molding, the bottom right side, one triangle spot to corner of lower base top. Interior upholstered in last decade or so, some minor discoloration, overall excellent condition; added lighting functioning, but wiring is not new and should be inspected by a professional. Original brasses. One key included, not all locks are functioning. Patch to one back board. Light scuffs, chips and age appropriate wear - presents exceptionally well.
