ART NOUVEAU CARVED WALNUT BUFFET
Likely French, circa early 20th century
Item # 911FIP16P
An exquisitely carved buffet cabinet from the Art Nouveau period during the first quarter of the 20th century, this is part of a larger matched suite of dining room pieces we acquired that may still be available in the shop inventory. Those other pieces include a set of six dining chairs, a matching dining table and a smaller serving buffet. The incredibly impressive carved grape leaf with chaotic furls of vines bearing grapes is a hallmark to each of these pieces and truly defines the cabinet. Note the clarity of the carving, the crispness of the leaf with its veins and sharp ridges. Also worth noting is the exquisite custom hardware, all cast in bronze and representing the same themes of prosperity.
Built in two parts, the upper section includes a glass cabinet with a notched adjustable shelf system - the shelf and brackets for this are missing, but usually these are easily made by a cabinetmaker. The lower cabinet features a pair of doors that swing open to reveal the same style of shelving. Over this, a pair of drawers offer convenient storage with a high grade of cabinet work that includes crisp and tight hand cut dovetails and solid oak secondary woods.
A very fine cabinet of excellent quality and remaining in very good original condition, this is a powerful strikepoint piece. It is particularly riveting when displayed as a group, so contact us for the availability of the other pieces in the set if the dining room is large enough to host more than one piece.
