ART NOUVEAU CARVED WALNUT DINING TABLE
Likely French, circa early 20th century
Item # 911WTT16K
A gorgeous Art Nouveau dining table crafted of walnut, it is part of a larger dining room suite we acquired that is catalogued separately in our shop inventory. These other matched pieces may still be available, including a set of six dining chairs, a server and a buffet - all have matched design elements, including the very distinctive and expertly carved grape leaves with vines full of grapes that feature so prominently in the stretcher bars of this dining table.
The top is planned out with the walnut veneers laid out in a dramatic and symmetrical manner, clearly cut in four parts from the same tree and matched to create this beautiful pattern. The apron surrounding all sides is veneered with a chaotic burl walnut with simple moldings that finish the edges. The top opens by loosening bolts on either side beneath the table and pulling apart to insert the single additional leaf (this a replacement).
Typical of the period, the legs and stretchers are carved and molded in a naturalistic form that resembles roots and branches while still capturing the cabriole leg form that is so pleasing in French furniture design.
Measurements: 28 1/2" H x 45" D x 49 1/2" W [without leaf]; 67 1/2" W [with leaf]
Excellent original condition. A few hairline cracks in the top (see images). One leaf extension, not original, with some color variation and design variation from the table.
