LOUIS XV STYLE GREEN CHINOISERIE PAINTED DRESSING TABLE
French, circa 1900; in "as-found" condition with needed paint restoration
Item # 911EYH16
A very attractive dressing table in the Louis XV taste from the turn of the century, the table is decorated in a chinoiserie relief over a green overall ground. It features a variety of Eastern scenes, the apron centered around the role of a single boatman as he ferries islanders while the top depicts a central grand residence with the activities of figures around the island.
The bronze mounts are particularly attractive, these beautifully cast both as sabots and knee mounts, but also for the pulls and escutcheons. The left and right drawer are faux and simply bring symmetry to the apron, while the center drawer pulls in and out smoothly with the typical hand-dovetailed joinery. Over this is a sliding letter writing surface, though this has bowed slightly and makes it a bit difficult to withdraw.
The center panel of the top lifts to transform into a dressing mirror while either side is lifted to reveal storage on the right and perfume storage on the left - note that the left side had a hinged lid at one point, this now missing.
A gorgeous piece, it requires restoration in order to be visually excellent - or can simply be enjoyed exactly as it is if the wear of the top is forgiven. We generally sell pieces in perfect condition, but this little gem was too fun to pass up. The mellow green surface, rich chinoiserie scenes and crisp bronze mounts are lively and make an interior bright and cheery.
The most cost effective solution to the top is to proceed as the prior owners clearly did - by placing a plant over the flawed space (which probably had a leak at some point, resulting in the loss of paint and cracking of underlying wood).
Measurements: 27 7/8" H x 21 3/4" D x 33 3/8" W
In "as-found" condition, requiring restoration to the top where the paint and chinoiserie has worn away completely in some areas; leather letter slide with a slight bow, making it difficult to withdraw from the apron; extensive paint wear throughout. Old cracks and joint separations, none concerning or causing looseness. Veneer losses to parquetry veneers inside of dressing surface. Missing hinged "lid" on left space.
