FRENCH LOUIS XV STYLE POLYCHROMED AND CARVED WINGBACK BERGERE
Circa late 19th century
Item # 007SRV30P
The rich polychromed surface of this wingback bergere arm chair is perhaps what makes it so attractive - the numerous layers of old paint and gilding have naturally worn through to reveal the red bole in some areas and even down to the patinated beech wood in others. The result is complex and charming. It enjoys the typical carvings of the period, the crest rocaille with relief carvings of the solid depicting curls of foliage and hints of stylized flowers, these also found more fully developed in the knees.
This is a comfortable chair with nice full proportions, the slight wings on either side giving it more lounging angles. It is a chair that is meant to be enjoyed - it is not simply a beautiful object but a very livable one.
