FRENCH LOUIS XVI STYLE CARVED POLYCHROMED CANAPE SOFA
Circa late 19th century
Item # 905GPZ31P
An absolutely gorgeous carved beech canapé sofa, this Louis XVI style settee is a delightful and vibrant object. The rich polychromed surface is a fine mixture of greens, dusty gilding, vibrant gilding and grays over a red and white bole ground. Note the incredible variety of carvings - the top of each leg is surrounded by carved curled foliage over stop-fluted columns with tiny acanthus carvings inset within them. The apron is a gorgeous display of laurel leaves and berries over discs. The legs are tenon-mortised with tiny pegs that lock this together, these pegs being hidden ingeniously within the carved rosette over each leg. It is covered with an attractive high-quality covering that remains in overall good condition.
For anyone passionate about the Louis XVI form, this is a stunning piece that makes a difference.
