LOUIS XVI STYLE CARVED GILTWOOD AUBUSSON UPHOLSTERED SALON SUITE
Paris, circa 1890; four armchairs and a canapé w/ original aubusson depicting birds & gardens
Item # 010KAP06C
An exquisite and rare five-piece salon suite in the Louis XVI taste from the last quarter of the 19th century, it features a single canapé and four matched fauteuils covered in an original needlepoint aubusson. The covering is incredibly interesting, each being unique with vivid scenes of gardens and depicting exotic birds. The frames are exquisite with a rich blend of motif embellishments - thin twisted rope, swirls interlaced with foliage and repeated laurel leaves, the crests beautifully relief carved with unusual draped garland and opposing scrolls. The frames sit over tapered and stop-fluted legs with ring carved ankles. It is a rich and delightful set with great individuality and a most refined overall craftsmanship.

Condition Report:
Extensive wear to gilding with chipping and use indicators throughout; areas of re-gilding and partial touchups; numerous leg joints have been repaired and several legs are slightly out-of-square - however, as a result all joints are sturdy, tight and allow the chairs to be used without concern; aubusson upholstery is original and has many areas of stitching loss, holes in the outer covering that reveal the beige fabric below, losses to the piping and numerous areas of discoloration - however, it remains sturdy and intact and should not be changed for any reason; cambric fabric under one chair and canapé replaced. All pieces are sturdy, comfortable and ready for immediate use in the home.
