About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

GRAND TOUR (19TH CENTURY)

A FATHER TEACHING HIS SON

Patinated bronze over black Belgian marble | Neo-Greco, circa third quarter of 19th century

Item # 106DBP17P

A very finely cast Grand Tour model of a Greek scholar sitting beside his son and answering questions his son has about the scroll in hand. The model is a complex arrangement with the two figures and their flowing garments intermingled, the surfaces intricately chiseled and brought to life. It is finished in a complex overall dark brown with hints of the lower ruby red patina glowing through in the rubbed areas. The reverse of the stool the man sits on is chiseled "9703". The whole is situated over a nearly round base of polished Belgian black marble with veins of yellow in the stone.

Measurements: 15 1/2" H (total), 14 5/16" H (bronze); marble base 12 1/8" D x 13 1/4" W

Condition Report:
Fine original condition. Minor scuffs and handling wear to patina, light rubbing wear to raised relief revealing reddish oxide hues to the lower patina; sealed with beeswax, polished and in fine presentation-ready condition.
